The Isle of Barra lies near the southern tip of the Outer Hebrides bordering the Atlantic Ocean, and is famed for the beauty of its beaches, machair (flower-studded grassland), lochs and hills. Although only a small island (approximately 9 x 5 miles with a population of 1100) it has a great variety of landscape, birdlife and flowers, and is often known as the “Jewel of the Hebrides”.
The island is ideal for walking, cycling and birdwatching, has many archaeological sites, loch and sea fishing, an indoor swimming pool and a nine hole golf course. Car and cycle hire are available, and boat trips can be taken to Eriskay (where Bonnie Prince Charlie first landed in Scotland in 1745 to reclaim the throne for the Stuarts) and to deserted Mingulay with its puffin colonies and breathtaking cliffs. The island of Barra and its people were the inspiration for Compton MacKenzie's novel “Whisky Galore”, and the classic film of the book was  made  on  location  here.

Enjoy a unique holiday experience on a beautiful island steeped in history with a rich Gaelic culture and a warm welcome to the visitor.
